Magento announced that they will discontinue support for Magento 1 after June 2020, that deadline is coming up fast. That means that from June of this year Magento will no longer be providing quality fixes and maybe more importantly security fixes.
There is a significant risk of staying with an unsupported version, with no future security patches. This also included 3rd party plugins as development of Magento 1 plugins have also stopped, so no updates or security patches will be available to any plugins you are using in your Magento installation either.
Something to consider carefully is that if you were to suffer a breach and you haven’t updated then your insurance company may not cover you.
Back in 2018 Magento themselves said “ While we’re committed to supporting the success of all merchants, the time to upgrade to Magento Commerce 2 is now.” Have you taken their advice? Have you already upgraded? If not, don’t panic, there is still time and there are plenty of reasons why this is a good plan for your business.
Magento 2 also brings with it a wealth of improvements and new features
- Database segmentation
- Email marketing automation
- Improved integrations with 3rd party softwares (ready-made or custom)
- Mobile friendly – optimized mobile performance to support Google’s mobile-first ranking
- Built in support Braintree, Klarna, Amazon Pay, Paypal, Facebook
- Secured and feasible upgrade future
- Improved performance & scalability (page load time reduced by 30-50%)
- Full page caching for improved speeds
- Improved technical architecture
- Improved checkout process
- Improved product management interface
